This is not local, but it's too priceless not to include. It's from a CNN story, detailing the bad reviews Julia Roberts got for her Broadway debut:
"'... a shaky Southern accent,' observed the AP's Michael Kuchwara, a particularly interesting criticism given that Roberts was raised in Georgia. Unless Mr. Kuchwara is a linguist, perhaps his criticicsm should stick to areas of his expertise or do some research about his subject before he lashes out at Ms. Roberts."
Hmmmmmmm......
Another example that critics don't do their own homework as much as Steven Lavigne thinks they do?
"What Anderson lacks in expressiveness, she makes up for in poker-faced, academic detachment..."
-- CHRISTY DESMITH for the Pioneer Press
What?????
Is this a compliment or a criticism?
Isn't that like saying what the character lacked in kindness, they made up for in cruelty? I mean, by making the choice to be poker-faced, didn't the actor essentially choose to lack expression? And does the critic feel lack-of-expression is a good thing or bad choice?
Who knows from this review.
